- President Donald Trump and Russia's Vladimir Putin opened their long-awaited summit Monday with a wink and slouch, respectively, then talked one on one behind closed doors for two-plus hours before the American leader declared their meeting was off to a "very, very good start for everybody".

US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are meeting privately, joined only by translators, in Finland after both sides unveiled agenda of the talks focusing on bilateral and global issues.

"My people came to me - Dan Coats came to me, some others - they said they think it's Russia", Trump said, referring to the director of national intelligence.

John McCain called Trump's summit "one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory". And, Trump once again seemed to doubt the US intelligence community's assessment that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 election.

"The president must appreciate that Russian Federation is not our ally". Ryan said Russian Federation "remains hostile to our most basic values and ideals".

Other high-profile Republicans also expressed dismay.

"This is shameful", said Senator Jeff Flake, the Arizona Republican.

Coat's predecessor, James Clapper, called Trump's acquiescence to Putin "an incredible capitulation", while former Central Intelligence Agency chief John Brennan labelled it "nothing short of treasonous".

In tweets Monday, Mr Trump continued to undermine the investigation and blamed his predecessor, Barack Obama, for failing to stop Russia's efforts to sway the 2016 election in Mr Trump's favour. Watch Trump's non-answer below, via CNN.

The Republican rebuke from Capitol Hill came largely from those lawmakers who have been willing to openly criticize the president.

During the conference, Putin reiterated his denial of alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 USA presidential elections.

"The president must demand that the 12 Russians named in the indictment be sent to the U.S.to stand trial", said Sen.

Instead, he directed his ire at Democrats and USA officials, calling special counsel Robert Mueller's probe of Russian Federation a 'disaster'.

Trump and Putin held a private, one-on-one meeting that lasted two hours, CBS News reported. Really? In fact, as special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation has painstakingly revealed, the ones to blame are a small coterie of officers in Russia's military intelligence agency GRU, acting no doubt under the orders of Putin.

"We were not able to clear all the backlog, but I think we made a first important step in this direction", he said.

"The headlines highlight the presidents' turbulent relations with the media and were published between the years 2000 and 2018", the statement said. Former CIA chief John Brennan called the leaders' joint press conference "treasonous".

Key members of the US Congress, including some Republicans, criticised Trump's performance at the press conference. Not only were Trump's comments imbecilic, he is wholly in the pocket of Putin. "It was wonderful and very, very disturbing".

With that, he waved, shook Putin's hand, and left to fly back to the United States. "He has got to be celebrating on the way home to Moscow".

"There is no moral equivalence between the United States and Russian Federation, which remains hostile to our most basic values and ideals", he said.
