Miller was arrested on Sunday morning, a month after police pulled items from his trash, WTTV in Indianapolis reported.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Monday. If probable cause is found for the charges, the prosecutor's office will have 72 hours to file formal charges against Miller.

Fort Wayne Police have made an arrest in one of the most famous cold cases in the city's history.

It took April Tinsley 10 minutes to die, he told investigators. The family lived in the 300 block of West Williams Street. DNA in the condoms matched that found on April's body. However, court dates in the case will be released as they are set. Authorities plan to offer additional information at a news conference on Tuesday. But two years later, a message scrawled in pencil or crayon appeared on a barn door not far from where her body was found, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said.

On Good Friday in 1988, April Tinsley was abducted while walking in her neighborhood in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and then raped and murdered.

The notes - some left on little girls' bicycles - were found inside bags with used condoms or Polaroid photographs of the killer's body.

Note: A mugshot for Miller is not available at this time. Earlier this year, Parabon NanoLabs told Oxygen.com that it had uploaded DNA data from about 100 crime scenes to the free genealogy site GEDmatch.

Under questioning, he folded and confessed to the brutal murder, an affidavit said.

Police launched a search but could not find a suspect.

On Sunday, investigators from the Fort Wayne Police Department and the Indiana State Police arrested John D. Miller for Tinsleys April 1988 death.

On July 15, detectives from Indiana State Police approached Miller in front of his home. According to police, authorities used a public DNA database to identify him as a suspect.

On July 2, officers began surveillance of Miller's home in Grabill, Ind. and eventually recovered three used condoms from his discarded trash, which in turn matched both the DNA found in Tinsley's underwear and the samples from the used condoms recovered in 2004. As the case stalled, and hundreds of suspects were targeted and cleared, the girls assailant would continue to haunt the Fort Wayne area. Brian Martin earlier this year.

That then allows police to focus in on potential suspects, and try to obtain specific DNA samples that prove or disprove their suspicions. When they asked if he had any idea why police wanted to talk to him, Miller responded "Ashley Tinsley", the affidavit said.

During the interview with police, Miller at first said, "I can't", when asked to explain what happened to Tinsley.

Her death by asphyxiation was ruled a homicide. He then drove her body to Spencerville and dumped it in a ditch, Miller told police. Her body was found three days after her disappearance in a ditch by a jogger. He said he saw Tinsley's shoe in the vehicle and threw it along the ditch, according to the affidavit.

Upon pressing, Miller admitted that he kidnapped the eight-year-old and later killed her so she would not report him to police.
