John Brennan, who served as Central Intelligence Agency director between 2013 and January 2017, called the president's comments "treasonous".

John Brennan, who led the Central Intelligence Agency during President Obama's second term and has been a frequent critic of Trump, tweeted immediately after the press conference that Trump's action during the summit "rises to & exceeds the threshold of 'high crimes & misdemeanors, '" referring to the standard used to determine reasons for impeachment of an American president.

- When a Russian reporter asked Trump about calling Putin "an adversary, a rival", Trump, who in the same interview called the European Union a "foe", said "Well, actually I called [Putin] a competitor".

Asked about Trump's comments by CNN, Republican Rep. Darrell Issa of California blasted the Federal Bureau of Investigation and cast doubt over Mueller's Friday indictments. My people came to me, (National Intelligence Director) Dan Coats came to me and some others.

When asked point blank whether he'd challenge Putin on the subject of Russian Federation interference, Trump avoided the question and pivoted to concerns he had about the investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server when she was secretary of state. "It was awesome and very, very disturbing". Russian Federation interfered in our elections & attacked our democracy. "He has got to be celebrating on the way home to Moscow".

Following a two and a half hour-long closed-door meeting between the two leaders, the Russia probe dominated a joint press conference, during which the Russian president urged Trump not to put stock in the findings of U.S. intelligence agencies, but instead to let the matter be resolved by courts. "We have not been getting along well for the last number of years", Trump said after arriving at the Presidential Palace in Finland's capital, where the leaders are meeting. "America wants a good relationship with the Russian people but Vladimir Putin and his thugs are responsible for Soviet-style aggression", Sasse said in the statement.

"No prior president has ever abased himself more abjectly before a tyrant".

Asked if he believed USA intelligence agencies, which concluded that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 election to help him defeat Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, he said he was not convinced.

"He had the chance right there in front of the world to confront Vladimir Putin and tell him to stay the hell out of American democracy, and he just didn't do it", Acosta said.

Democratic party chairman Tom Perez said Mr Trump should cancel the talks, and that Mr Putin "not a friend of the United States".

The press conference also touched briefly on policy issues, such as Syria and trade.

The most consistent critic of Trump in the upper chamber has been Flake's fellow Arizonan John McCain, who past year helped scuttle the president's attempt to get rid of the Affordable Health Care Act, known as Obamacare.

McCain joined other congressional Republicans on Monday in contradicting Trump and acknowledging Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Graham quipped that Trump ought to check a soccer ball Putin gave to Trump for listening devices, "and never allow it in the White House".

The Republican rebuke from Capitol Hill came largely from those lawmakers who have been willing to openly criticize the president.

Richard Burr of North Carolina said his committee has no reason to doubt the intelligence community's "conclusion that President Putin ordered an influence campaign aimed at the 2016 elections".

The Russian and United States leaders began the talks with exchanging brief greetings.

- Putin admitted he supported Trump in the election.

Meanwhile, Mr Putin said in Russian: "It is now time to talk in depth about our bilateral ties and sore points in the world".

Democrats also sounded alarm.

In some of the strongest words yet reflecting the unease of Washington's traditional allies, Germany's foreign minister said on Monday Europe could no longer rely on the United States.

Trump was met with a host of criticism immediately following the summit.
