Nikola Kalinic has rejected a World Cup runners-up medal gifted him by his teammates and coaching staff. He was offered a second-place medal but told Sportske Novosti.

Kalinic, who was sent back home after Croatia's opening match, said that he can not accept the runners-up medal because he played no part in his country's road to the final in Russian Federation. Photo Credit: Getty Images.

Kalinic reportedly refused to come on as a substitute in Croatia's opening 2-0 win over Nigeria due to a back problem, and was subsequently dismissed by coach Zlatko Dalic.

"Thanks for the medal, but I didn't play in Russian Federation", he told Sportske Novosti.

The Blazers boss Dalic was bitter with the attitude put out by the former Blackburn player, having encountered a similar incident against Brazil in a pre-World Cup game and in a training session.

Kalinic's absence from the Croatia squad left them with just one designated striker for the remainder of the competition, with Mario Mandzukic rising to the challenge of being the sole option up front, scoring three times in six appearances, including a goal in the final.

Meanwhile, as TUKO.co.ke had earlier reported, Croatia's first female president Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic outdid Heads of states in attendance at the World Cup 2018.

Croatia topped their group before beating Denmark on penalties in the Round of 16, before beating Russian Federation also on penalties.
