Facebook plans to meet with Crimson Hexagon officials over the next few days. The firm analyzes public Facebook data for clients, which include a non-profit with ties to the Kremlin and USA government agencies including the Department of Homeland Security, the Wall Street Journal reports.

"We don't allow developers to build surveillance tools using information from Facebook or Instagram", said Facebook in a statement, the Guardian reports. "We take these allegations seriously, and we have suspended these apps while we investigate Based on our investigation to date, Crimson Hexagon did not obtain any Facebook or Instagram information inappropriately". Facebook has imposed greater restrictions on what types of data these third parties can access and is looking into whether any of them retained data against its policies. On the other hand, Mark Zuckerberg and his exec team will want to be seen to be being tough on companies that don't follow the rules in regards to harvesting personal information from social media. The defunct political consulting firm, which worked for Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, gathered data on tens of millions of Facebook users.

People can share their information with developers on Facebook and Instagram - just as they can when they download an app on their phone. The company reportedly had contracts with the US government and a Russian nonprofit with connections to the Kremlin.

He said developers were allowed to "use public or aggregated information to produce anonymised insights for business purpose".

Twitter did not respond to a request for comment. "No one using Crimson Hexagon would be able to learn anything about an individual that isn't already contained in publicly-available data".

In a blog entry posted by the firm on Friday, its chief technology officer Chris Bingham defended the company's work - without specifically mentioning Facebook's investigation.

In April this year, Facebook had warned investors that more users" data scandals in the future may adversely affect the social networking giant " s reputation and brand image.
