Facebook suspends analytics company over data collection

The social network is under investigation by three federal agencies over its links with Cambridge Analytica, and, since the crisis erupted, Facebook has suspended more than 200 apps that had access to its data.

Facebook plans to meet with Crimson Hexagon officials over the next few days. The firm analyzes public Facebook data for clients, which include a non-profit with ties to the Kremlin and USA government agencies including the Department of Homeland Security, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Crimson Hexagon says on its website it has access to over 1 trillion consumer conversations from social media, forums, blogs and reviews.

Mr Bingham says his firm routinely vets potential government customers to ensure they comply with policies of its "data partners" like Facebook.

The firm, Crimson Hexagon, boasts an impressive list of blue chip clients and claims to have collected more than 1tn public social media posts from Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, and other sources. People can share their information with developers on Facebook and Instagram - just as they can when they download an app on their phone. The company reportedly had contracts with the US government and a Russian nonprofit with connections to the Kremlin.

He said developers were allowed to "use public or aggregated information to produce anonymised insights for business purpose".

Twitter did not respond to a request for comment. "No one using Crimson Hexagon would be able to learn anything about an individual that isn't already contained in publicly-available data".

In a blog entry posted by the firm on Friday, its chief technology officer Chris Bingham defended the company's work - without specifically mentioning Facebook's investigation.

In April this year, Facebook had warned investors that more users" data scandals in the future may adversely affect the social networking giant " s reputation and brand image.
