President Emmerson Mnangagwa has urged the white community to let bygones be bygones and to work with the government in building an inclusive society.

Mnangagwa, who came to power when Mugabe was removed in a de facto coup in November, is on the campaign trail ahead of what is expected to be a tight contest with his main rival, Nelson Chamisa, the 40-year-old leader of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).

The white Zimbabweans who are left in the country - estimated at around 30,000 - would usually vote MDC or for another opposition party, given the strained relationship with Mnangagwa's ruling ZANU-PF.

But I think they have a role to play in terms of skills in the farming sector.

"This issue of new [land] invasions is a thing of the past". And again, we are racially blind. It is criminal talking about that. Many farms ended up in the hands of powerful politicians, soldiers or local chiefs and fell into disrepair.

Zimbabwe's white population has fallen to less than one percent of the country's 16 million after Mugabe imposed the policy to expropriate farms in 2000. He runs it down.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has been fighting off "a bad cold", hence his use of medication, his spokesperson said, after pictures of the president taking pills at a rally went viral last week.

Mnangagwa is hoping to revive a once promising economy, end chronic cash shortages and bring down soaring unemployment. Mugabe's regime seized most of the white-owned land in the early 2000s in what he said was land reform meant to address colonial imbalances.

A few weeks back, Zanu-PF supporters also walked out on Mnangagwa as he was addressing a rally in Bindura.

There was that of Chamisa doing push-ups in public - portraying a Rocky Balbao image‚ a people's champion‚ one that understands politics is not about how hard you hit‚ but how hard you can get hit and still get up.

"I'm not surprised. You have to look at where this took place", said David Coltart, an MDC senator.

Mnangagwa was speaking at what his ZANU-PF party called a "white interface rally" to garner votes from the race about whom his predecessor, Mugabe, used to say, "The only good ones are the dead ones". "It'll be the community who have business connections".

The elections, the first held in decades without Mugabe on the ballot, are being closely watched by the worldwide community.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa met with The Elders delegation led by former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Friday morning at State House.

His deputy, Constantino Chiwenga, had to ask the supporters to remain seated since his boss had not yet addressed them.
