Donald Trump mulls imposing 25% tariffs on Chinese goods

China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang reiterated at a regular news briefing in Beijing that the United States' efforts at "blackmail" would fail.

US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said on Twitter that the measure sought to "urge China to stop its unfair practices, open its markets, and engage in true market competition".

Increasing the rates to 25 per cent could make them significantly more painful.

Tariffs could escalate the trade war between the two biggest economies in the world although the tariffs will not be imposed until after a period of public comment.

Even if the USA tries to buy fewer goods from China through imposing tariffs on Chinese goods, it still has to buy these goods from other countries, he said.

The PBOC on Friday set the mid-price for yuan trading at 6.8322, which is 0.6 per cent lower than Thursday's level.

Bloomberg News reported, citing three unidentified sources, the Trump administration would propose imposing 25 per cent tariffs on a $200-billion list of Chinese goods targeted in a new round of penalties, up from the planned 10 per cent.

"We don't have anything to announce today about a specific event, or a specific round of discussions, but communication remains open and we are trying to figure out whether the conditions present themselves for a specific engagement between the two sides", one of the officials said.

"China and the US have had several rounds of consultations and reached important consensus, but regrettably the USA did not fulfill its obligations", Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Monday.

In measured and balanced responses, China made two points.

Tariffs on another $16bn of products are pending, the second part of tariffs on $50bn worth of imports that the U.S. announced in March. The implementation could be delayed for weeks as the administration works out the details of which products it will target.

U.S. threats have escalated since, with the President saying he is ready to impose tariffs on all $500bn of Chinese imports.

- Tariff increases from 10% to 25% follow CNY currency fall.

Since July 1, the States have introduced duties for goods worth $34 bln and China responded in a tit-for-tat manner.

Beijing warned the threats will only be counter-productive for ongoing trade negotiations.

Liberty Times quotes an economist, Larry Hu, who expects that China may post a current account deficit of approximately US$24 billion for the first half of 2018.
