  • Giant Rogue Planet Wandering Outside Our Solar System Has Been Discovered

The new discovery can make boffins believe that they may have a novel way of detecting and finding exoplanets, including rogue ones that are hard to identify since they are not orbiting a parent star like the planets do in our solar system. They call it a "rogue" planet because it has no orbit or it is not tethered to a parent star.

Scientists detected the enormous planet from the USA -based Very Large Array observatory.

'This object is right at the boundary between a planet and a brown dwarf, or 'failed star, ' and is giving us some surprises that can potentially help us understand magnetic processes on both stars and planets, ' said Melodie Kao, led the study while a graduate student at Caltech, and is now a Hubble Postdoctoral Fellow at Arizona State University.

They were also initially thought not to give off any radio waves, but in 2001, they were discovered to be absolutely teeming with magnetic activity.

On Earth, auroras are generated by interactions between its magnetic field and solar winds.

Tornado warning issued for parts of Giles County, Va. and Monroe County
The National Weather Service warned that flying debris from a tornado would be risky to those caught without shelter. This storm Tuesday night moved from south to north, first striking in OR and then producing damage in Point Place.

Nevertheless, we still can't figure out how brown dwarf stars get auroras, considering they're nowhere near any type of stellar winds.

Simultaneously, the Caltech team that originally detected its radio emission in 2016 had observed it again in a new study at even higher radio frequencies and confirmed that its magnetic field was even stronger than first measured.

The object was originally detected in 2016 as one of five brown dwarfs the scientists studied with the VLA to gain new knowledge about magnetic fields and the mechanisms by which some of the coolest such objects can produce strong radio emission. But this new data seems to show it's a much younger object and its mass was therefore a lot smaller - meaning it could theoretically be classified as a planet in its own right. The enigmatic celestial body was found to have a planetary mass and weigh 12.7 times more than Jupiter, despite having a radius only 1.22 times bigger than that of the gas giant. Latest measurements have established that the exoplanet has a surface temperature of 825 degrees Celsius (around 1517 degrees Fahrenheit), shows the International Business Times.

But its magnetic field is something worth a closer look.

Scientists have made the first radio-telescope detection of a huge free-floating planet beyond our solar system, a new study said. How the auroras are caused in brown dwarfs is unclear, but the scientists think one possibility is an orbiting planet or moon interacting with the brown dwarf's magnetic field, such as what happens between Jupiter and its moon Io. But the discovery could also have another exciting implication that goes way beyond understanding aurora.
