  • Robert Redford says he's retiring from acting

Actor Robert Redford addresses the media at an opening day news conference for the Sundance Film Festival at the Egyptian Theatre in Park City, Utah, January 16, 2014.

Legendary actor and director Robert Redford has confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that he will indeed be making good on a 2016 promise to retire from movies, with Fox Searchlight's upcoming crime drama The Old Man & the Gun serving as the 81-year-old's swan song.

In the David Lowery-directed film, Redford plays Forrest Tucker, the real-life career criminal in love with his self-appointed job of robbing banks and breaking out of prison.

Redford previously told his grandson, Dylan Redford, during a 2016 interview at Walker Art Center that he was thinking about retiring from the field in which he's worked for almost 60 years.

'I thought, "Well, that's enough".

11 killed and 59 people wounded after mass shootings in Chicago
Overall, police say at least 57 people were shot since Friday evening during one of the most violent weekends on record. Police say the violence is unacceptable and they say they continue to take illegal guns off the streets.

"The thing that really got me about him - which I hope the film shows - is he robbed 17 banks and he got caught 17 times and went to prison 17 times". Here is Redford's explanation for how his decision connects to the role. "I'm an impatient person, so it's hard for me to sit around and do take after take after take", he said at the time.

"To me, that was a wonderful character to play at this point in my life", he reflects on the real-life man he embodies. When asked whether he would still direct films, he told EW, "We'll see about that".

Other celebrated performances include Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, All the President's Men, Three Days of the Condor, The Natural, Out of Africa and All is Lost. The outlet notes that he won a Best Director Academy Award in the 1980s for "Ordinary People".

"Yeah, a lot-and a lot lately because I'm getting exhausted of acting".

He will star in The Old Man and The Gun, the true story of a criminal who escaped from jail in a kayak at the age of 59 before committing more heists. "It's just me, just the way it used to be, and so going back to sketching-that's sort of where my head is right now". Elisabeth Moss, Sissy Spacek, Casey Affleck and Danny Glover are also featured in the film, which is set for a September 28 release.
