  • Plastic surgeons say more patients coming in with 'Snapchat dysmorphia'

Note that the filters in social networks and applications for editing can photo or video to make a ideal skin, expressive cheekbones, large eyes, small nose and so on.

The definition is a specific version of body dysmorphia where the sufferer over-fixates on what they deem to be flaws in their appearance, which in turn has them wanting to make themselves look like they would as if photo filters, specifically Snapchat ones, in this case, had been applied to them.

The authors argue that doctors need to be aware of the implications social media can have for their patients' self-esteem and overall health.

However, given the accessibility of editing applications, once seemingly unattainable beauty standards now flood social media feeds daily and the "perfect" people in the photos are your friends, classmates and family members, the JAMA article said. A 2017 survey from the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery sound that 55 percent of surgeons report seeing patients who mention selfies as a reason for requesting surgery, compared to 42 percent in 2015. However, most do plastic surgery teenagers and young people. The number was a 13 percent increase from the previous year, according to The Post.

"The pervasiveness of these filtered images can take a toll on one's self esteem, make one feel inadequate for not looking a certain way in the real world, and may even act as a trigger and lead to body dysmorphic disorder", the piece adds.

A 2007 study published in Primary Psychiatry found that about 80 percent of people suffering from body dysmorphic disorder "experience lifetime suicidal ideation and 24% to 28% have attempted suicide". Those with BDD often go to great lengths to hide their imperfections, engage in repetitive behaviors like skin picking or grooming, and may visit dermatologists or plastic surgeons frequently, hoping to change their appearance.
