Perseid Meteor Shower to put on show over South Florida

  • The radiant for the Perseids or area from where the meteors seem to originate is in the constellation Perseus

The meteor shower is already happening nightly and has been since July 17. The best views will come before dawn on the 13th, Astronomy magazine predicts. During outburst years (such as in 2016) the rate can be between 150-200 meteors an hour. We've talked about the Perseid's before, so why am I talking about them again? The moon will be at a crescent, which means more darkness to see more meteors. The Perseids are rich in fireball meteors that are very bright and often leave a trail across the sky that will last for a second or two.

The best time to observe any meteor shower is after midnight (or after 1 a.m. if you're on daylight time), because then you are on the leading edge of the earth in its orbit around the sun and it sweeps up more meteor - just like bugs on your windshield on a freeway.

The Perseid shower is the most popular meteor shower every year.

The particles, many no bigger than a grain of sand or a pea, blast across the sky at some 132,000 miles per hour and disintegrate high up in our atmosphere after making a brilliant flash of light. However, the meteors can appear anywhere in the sky. It's just to the left of the Pleiades, the Seven Sisters constellation.

Victor Wanyama to reject potential Roma transfer
Wanyama is now sidelined after he was forced to return to London from Spurs' tour of the U.S. after a recurrence of knee injury. Wanyama was sidelined for four months last season and the injury is another blow for the White Hart Lane club's engine room.

But unlike lots of meteor showers, which only happen on a night or so, the Perseids is actually spread out over a number of nights.

In ancient Greek star lore, Perseus is the son of the god Zeus and the mortal Danae, according to Earthsky.

Comet Swift-Tuttle causes the Perseids.

The Perseid Meteor Shower is back and the 2018 edition could be a banner event as we learn on Looking Up this week. "So don't rush the process".
