Australia's most populous state was declared entirely in drought on Wednesday and struggling farmers were given new authority to shoot kangaroos that compete with livestock for sparse pasture during the most intense dry spell in more than 50 years.

It includes two lump sum payments worth up to A$12,000 per household, and changes to an assets test to grant support to thousands more farmers.

Farmers have also had to ration water for their families and their herds because the dams on their properties are dry or almost empty. So wild animals were not deprived of water the cattle, the government of New South Wales has taken such a step.

"Many farmers are taking livestock off their paddocks, only to then see kangaroos move in a take whatever is left", Blair said.

But the drought conditions in New South Wales state this year have been the driest and most widespread since 1965. Farmers have told harrowing stories of failing crops, severe water shortages and being unable to feed livestock.

"Anybody on the land that will make a phone call to the Department of Environment can get permission to shoot nearly whatever they want to shoot and it's unaudited and unchecked and that's our concern - animal welfare", Borda told Australian Broadcasting Corp.

The reason was the largest in the last half-century drought.

Though Australia has long suffered from spells of drought, other parts of the world are now experiencing extreme weather which experts say is evidence of the Earth's changing climate. The state governments would also be asked to submit reports on drought condition, so that relevant relief measures can be implemented.

Across Southern Australia, 2018 saw the second-driest autumn on record, according to the Bureau of Meteorology, with rainfall 57mm (2.24in) below average, with less than 10mm of rain was recorded in parts of NSW in July, and drier than normal conditions are forecast in coming months, as reported by the BBC.
