Casey Affleck says he is sorry for his "unprofessional" behavior on the set of his 2010 movie I'm Still Here and has weighed in on the #MeToo campaign to stop sexual harassment, which had helped prompt him to cancel an appearance at the Oscars previous year.

The allegations against Affleck resurfaced last fall when the actor was receiving critical acclaim for his starring role in "Manchester by the Sea".

Affleck settled two civil lawsuits from the set of his 2010 movie "I'm Still Here". "The cast was the crew and the crew was kind of the cast and it was an unprofessional environment and, you know, the buck had to stop with me being one of the producers and I have to accept responsibility for that and that was a mistake", explained the actor.

Affleck said that he regretted "that I was ever involved in a conflict that resulted in a lawsuit", and said, "I wish I had found a way to resolve things in a different way".

But he contributed "to that unprofessional environment;" he permitted that sort of behavior from others on set, and he wishes that he didn't. Affleck denied all the allegations at the time and later settled two lawsuits filed by the accusers for undisclosed amounts. While he has addressed the lawsuits, he also has not spoken publicly since the #MeToo and Time's Up movements took hold 10 months ago.

In that time, Affleck also opted out of presenting the best actress award at the Oscars - traditionally the responsibility of the previous year's best actor victor.

Asked why he withdrew from this year's Oscars, Affleck told Associated Press interviewer Lindsey Bahr, "I think it was the right thing to do, just given everything that was going on in our culture at the moment.

"I think bigger picture, in this business women have been underrepresented and underpaid and objectified and diminished and humiliated and belittled in a bazillion ways and just generally had a mountain of grief thrown at them forever". "I really did not know what I was responsible for as the boss".

She said that later in the shoot Affleck 'attempted to manipulate [her] into staying in a hotel room with him, and when she resisted he grabbed her in a hostile manner in an effort to intimidate her into complying'.

"Those are the people who are kind of leading this conversation and should be leading the conversation".

However, Affleck, who will next appear in the movie, The Oldman and The Gun, admitted the environment was "unprofessional".

"I want to be in a world where grown men model compassion and decency and also contrition when it's called for, and I certainly tell (my sons) to own their mistakes when they make them", he said.

"The Old Man & the Gun", his third collaboration with director David Lowery, will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival before opening in theaters on September 28.

"(Lowery) always assembles a really nice group of people around him", Affleck said.

At his production company, Sea Change Media, he said he and his development partner Whitaker Lader are looking to shepherd filmmakers with stories that aren't well-represented in Hollywood.

'Affleck repeatedly referred to women as "cows"; he discussed his sexual exploits and those of other celebrities that he allegedly witnessed; and asked [White] after learning her age, "Isn't it about time you get pregnant"'.
