Dozens dead after school bus carrying children hit by airstrike

  • One dead, several wounded after Saudi Arabia 'intercepts Yemen missile'

The coalition did not specify the target, but the International Committee of the Red Cross said the attack hit a bus filled with children, causing dozens of casualties.

The International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC) said that a hospital it supports in Saada had received 29 dead bodies of "mainly children" under 15 years of age, and 40 injured, including 30 children.

The attack on Jazan was the second ballistic missile fired at Saudi Arabia by the Iran-backed rebels this week.

The missile was sacked from Amran province in northern Yemen on Wednesday night, the coalition said in a statement published by the Saudi Press Agency.

Nearly 10,000 people - two-thirds of them civilians - have been killed since the Houthi movement took control of much of the north of the country, including the capital Sanaa, in 2014, forcing President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi into exile in neighbouring Saudi Arabia.

"Central Command was not involved in the air strike in Saada".

The Huthi' Al-Masirah TV reported that 39 people had been killed and 51 wounded, "mostly children".

‏He added: "Launching ballistic missiles at densely-populated civilian areas is a direct breach of the principles of global humanitarian law".

Colonel al-Maliki said the coalition will take all necessary actions against the criminal, terrorist acts of pro-Iranian Houthi militias, such as the recruitment and placement of children on battle fronts and "using them as tools to cover for their terrorist acts".

"Save the Children condemns this horrific attack and is calling for a full, immediate and independent investigation into this and other recent attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, including schools and hospitals", said the group in a statement.

Turki al-Maliki said the kingdom's air defense had intercepted a ballistic missile fired by the Houthi rebels at a densely populated civilian area in Jizan, according to the Saudi Press Agency.

The United States and other Western powers provide arms and intelligence to the alliance, and human rights groups have criticised them over coalition air strikes that have killed hundreds of civilians at hospitals, schools and markets.

Saudi Arabia, the UAE and their allies in the Arab Coalition intervened in the conflict at the request of Mr Hadi's government.

The Saudi coalition has been at war with the Houthis since March 2015.

The first day of the campaign rounded up 500 weapons from tribal members in the area, said Col Al Buhar.

It is with the stated aim of dislodging the Houthis, and restoring the previous government, that the Sunni coalition has waged a years-long airstrike campaign in the country with the support of the U.S. Since large-scale fighting erupted in 2015, the ensuing violence has left more than 10,000 people killed and the country's health infrastructure so badly battered, almost 18 million Yemenis lack reliable access to food.

"It's hard to believe we live in a world where children should live in fear of such attacks, yet here we are", she added.

Why is there a war in Yemen?
