  • A magnitude 7 earthquake has rocked the Indonesian island of Lombok

A powerful natural disaster struck the Indonesian tourist island of Lombok on Sunday, killing at least 82 people and shaking neighbouring Bali, one week after another quake on Lombok killed more than a dozen.

"The death toll becomes 91 people, 209 people are injured, thousands of houses are wrecked, and thousands of people are evacuated.

Sunday's quake came a week after another that hit east Lombok, killing 12 people.

"There were widespread power outages (primarily in the northern and western regions of Lombok) although this is beginning to be restored".

K.Shanmugam, the Home Minister of Singapore, who was in Lombok for a conference at the time of the natural disaster, described on his Facebook post how his hotel room on the 10 floor shook violently.

"It was quite impossible to stand up". Here I am on vacation, enjoying life in Bali and suddenly this thing happened.it's SO close I'm genuinely terrified.it just went through my head how lucky and powerless I am. "Lots of cracks, fallen doors", he wrote.

The quake, initially reported to be of 7.0-magnitude before the U.S. Geological Service downgraded it to a 6.9, struck the island of Lombok-a popular spot with tourists-where last week's natural disaster also hit. "People filled the streets", said Michelle Lindsay, an Australian tourist.

Video showed screaming people running in panic from houses in a Bali neighborhood and vehicles rocking. Eyewitnesses said a number of aftershocks rattled parts of Indonesia after the initial quake.

The tourists have been moved from the quake-affected islands and rescue operations are underway.

The quake was mostly felt in Mataran, the capital of Lombok Island, prompting residents to flee their homes.

A woman was pulled alive on Tuesday from under a grocery store that fell apart in the rural north of the tropical holiday island, near the epicenter of Sunday's quake.

National disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho told reporters some 200 "domestic and foreign" tourists had already been taken off the islands.

Some villagers living near the epicenter had to sleep in roadside tents as their houses were destroyed. Amid collapsed homes, most hotels seemed to have shut and beaches were deserted.

There was two more strong secondary quakes and more than 60 aftershocks.

He tweeted: "This morning I bumped into so many British families leaving Bali".

"We are cutting short our holiday because I can't walk and we're just not in the mood anymore, more in the mood to see our loved ones", said the 26-year-old, sitting on a trolley with his leg bandaged. A magnitude 6.4 quake on July 29 killed 16 people.

The Gilis are three coral-fringed tropical islands popular with backpackers and divers, a few kilometres off the northwest coast of the larger Lombok island. "We are all queueing at the port, but there´s not enough boats", she said tearfully. The archipelago of thousands of islands sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a seismic activity hotspot.
