Palestinian militants on the Gaza Strip launched at least 150 rockets at Israel overnight, and Israel retaliated by pounding the region with deadly airstrikes.

Israel and Hamas have reached a ceasefire agreement brokered by Egypt Thursday night that went into effect at 10:45pm, Al Jazeera reported.

According to the Health Ministry in the Hamas-controlled enclave, Kammash and her daughter were killed in an airstrike in Jafarawi in central Gaza, the ministry said, while her husband was injured. The UN's Mideast envoy appealed for calm.

The violence came after two fighters from the military wing of Hamas, which governs Gaza, were killed by Israeli fire on Tuesday. Israel said it struck a Hamas post in retaliation.

Israel's rescue service Magen David Adom said three Israelis, including two men aged 34 and 20 were taken to hospital for treatment.

Despite the escalation between the two sides, The Associated Press quotes an unnamed Hamas official as saying that cease-fire talks were in their final stage even though disagreements persisted.

After Israel responded with tank fire, dozens of rockets were sent toward Israeli territory on Wednesday night.

Gaza's Health Ministry said three Palestinians were slightly injured in the strikes. The ministry said the militant and the civilians were killed in separate incidents.

A Ma'an reporter said that loud explosions were heard in the city of Rafah, which was caused by the launching of Israeli missiles towards various sites belonging to the Hamas movement.

According to the Israeli military, at least 11 rockets were intercepted by the Iron Dome aerial defense system, while a majority of the remaining rockets hit open areas.

Israeli forces have launched three military assaults on the Gaza Strip since 2008.

Yoav Galant, Israeli cabinet minister for construction and housing, said that "whatever is needed to be done to defend our civilians and soldiers will be done, no matter what would be the price in Gaza".

"I very much hope that we are on the brink of a new day on the matter of Gaza", he told reporters.

"Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman reassured the mayor of Sderot and the heads of the regional councils in the vicinity of the Gaza border that "we will do what needs to be done" to restore calm to region".

The United Nations, he said, has engaged with Egypt in an "unprecedented effort" to avoid serious conflict, but cautioned that "the situation can rapidly deteriorate with devastating consequences for all people".

Sirens were sounded in several areas close to the border with Gaza, warning residents to seek immediate shelter, the Israeli army said. A member of Hamas died in one of the air strikes. "We are closing in on operation in Gaza", he said. Israel Railways has said that trains will not be running on the line between Ashkelon and Sderot. The protests have been aimed in part at trying to break the blockade.

The video was also shared by at least one account in Gaza as proof that Hamas should not be messed with and will hit back if attacked.
