Selon NBC News, le film avec Ewan McGregor dans le rôle-titre ne peut pas être diffusé sur le sol chinois. Mais c'est dans un film bien plus familial qu'on le retrouvera le 24 octobre prochain en France. Officiellement, le mystère reste entier puisqu'aucune raison n'a été donnée. Celui-ci ne connaîtra par contre jamais de spectateurs chinois, du moins tant qu'ils seront en Chine. En effet, des opposants au régime chinois ont utilisé par le passé des représentations de Winnie l'Ourson pour évoquer le leader du régime et le tourner en dérision, tout en échappant à la censure. A l'été 2017 les autorités avaient déjà fait supprimer toutes les photos de Winnie de l'application de messagerie WeChat.
