  • Melania Trump's parents sworn in as US citizens report

Melania Trump's parents were sworn in as United States citizens on Thursday, completing a legal path to citizenship that their son-in-law has suggested eliminating.

Viktor and Amalija Knavs, both in their 70s, took the citizenship oath at a special, private ceremony in New York City.

They arrived and departed from a Manhattan federal building escorted by Homeland Security police. Wildes did not elaborate, citing the couple's privacy.

Melania Trump became a USA citizen in 2006, after entering the U.S. on a coveted Einstein visa for people of "extraordinary ability" in 2001 when she was working as a model.

Pressed on the fact that the President has harshly criticized family-based migration and regularly refers to it as "chain migration", Wildes responded: "I can't comment on the President's politics when it comes to my clients but I have stood up against the President's immigration policies personally".

Under US immigration law, Melania's parents would need to have had green cards for at least five years before they could apply for citizenship.

Studies have shown, however, that immigrants have boosted the economy and commit crimes at lower rates than the native born.

There has been speculation that the President Donald Trump's in-laws may have benefited from the "chain migration" process that he has claimed endangers Americans and vowed to restrict.

Critics said the Knavs's ability to secure green cards and citizenship smacks of hypocrisy given the president's hard-line immigration stance.
