  • Pakistan supports Saudi Arabia in tussle with Canada

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is following with enormous concern the crisis in the relations between Saudi Arabia and Canada and places on record its solidarity with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Foreign Office said on Thursday.

Canada is quietly nudging allies including Germany and Sweden for help with resolving its row with Saudi Arabia, a government source confirmed Thursday.

The statement added that Pakistan supports the sovereignty of countries and the principle of non-interference in internal affairs of other countries, citing the United Nations agreements, particularly, the global sovereignty law, as stating the respect of sovereignty and non-interference to enhance peaceful and friendly relations among countries.

"Pakistan stands by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in protecting its sovereignty as a matter of principle and based on the historic and brotherly relations between our two countries", Dr. Faisal added.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appeared to extend an olive branch on Wednesday, saying he would keep pressing Saudi Arabia on civil liberties but also saying the Gulf Arab state had made some progress on human rights. It also ended state-backed educational and medical programs in a dispute that was sparked by Canada demanding the release of jailed rights activists.

Australia’s most populous state entirely in drought
But the drought conditions in New South Wales state this year have been the driest and most widespread since 1965. Farmers have told harrowing stories of failing crops, severe water shortages and being unable to feed livestock.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stood firm, saying: "Canada will always speak strongly and clearly in private and in public on questions of human rights ... at home and overseas, wherever we see the need".

Trudeau noted that Freeland had "a long conversation" on Tuesday with her counterpart Adel al-Jubeir to try to resolve the dispute.

"We join Canada in urging Saudi Arabia to release women's rights activists Samar Badawi and Nassimaal Sada", said the statement signed by 22 non-governmental groups and individuals, including the Nobel Women's Initiatve, Oxfam, and Lawyers without Borders. "They need to resolve it together", US State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert told a briefing on Wednesday.

In March 2015, Saudi Arabia recalled its ambassador from Stockholm over criticism by the Swedish foreign minister of Riyadh's human rights record.

Earlier this year, Bloomberg News reported that Saudi Arabia was scaling back its dealings with some German companies amid a diplomatic spat with Berlin.
