There is no simple way to detect Alzheimer's.

For the first time, new research shows that aggressively lowering blood pressure could reduce the risk of developing a cognitive disease.

Age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma were associated with an increased prevalence in cognitive decline that are part of Alzheimer's, researchers report in findings published Wednesday in the journal Alzherimer's & Dementia.

"Referred to as 'the window to the brain, ' the eye provides substantial information on brain health", the researchers wrote.

A new study presented at the Alzheimer's Association's International Conference found that intensely treating blood pressure and lowering the top number to 120 instead of 140 can lower the chances of developing Alzheimer's and Dementia.

The latest Alzheimer's breakthrough is focused on eyes, which researchers are saying can be "read" for early detection of the disease.

Doctors say it's too early to tell if an eye exam could help diagnose Alzheimer's but gives doctors more guidance on potential screening methods and future treatment. "This study solidifies that there are mechanistic things we can learn from the brain by looking at the eye". In this study, the researchers estimated that the 10-year risk of a post-hemodialysis dementia diagnosis is 19% for patients aged 66-70 years, rising to 28% for those 76-80 years. Throughout a five-year study period, they diagnosed almost 800 of those monitored with Alzheimer's.

Lee said anything happening in the eye may relate to what's happening in the brain, an extension of the central nervous system.

Mara McAdams-DeMarco, PhD at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and her colleagues analyzed information on 356,668 USA hemodialysis patients of average age of 66 years.

"We don't mean people with these eye conditions will get Alzheimer's disease", said lead researcher Dr. Cecilia Lee, assistant professor of ophthalmology at the UW School of Medicine.
