NASCAR CEO and Chairman Brian France has taken an indefinite leave of absence following his arrest on Sunday night after being stopped by police on Long Island, N.Y., where he owns a home.

Police observed that France's blood alcohol levels were more than twice the legal limit and added that he struggled to keep his balance during a sobriety test.

The 56-year-old was detained overnight and was released on Monday, when he also issued a statement announcing his decision to take leave.

France said in a statement Monday that his indefinite leave will be used to focus on his "personal affairs".

Brian France has been NASCAR chief since 2003, following in the footsteps of his late father, Bill France Jr., and grandfather, Bill France Sr., who founded the organization in 1948. Effective immediately, Nascar vice chairman and executive vice president Jim France has assumed the role of interim chairman and chief executive officer'.

NASCAR doesn't comment on its ownership structure, but Jim France and his niece, Lesa France Kennedy (Brian's sister), are the co-owners of the sanctioning body, according to available public documents and sources.
