He left Tesla in May after taking "some time off to recharge and spend time with his family".

A report by technology website Daring Fireball on Thursday suggested that Field will work at Apple with former colleague Bob Mansfield, who has led Project Titan.

Doug Field is a very experienced engineer, having enjoyed spells at Segway from 1999 to 2008 as VP of design and engineering as well as becoming the company's CTO.

Field was Apple's vice president of Mac hardware engineering and moved to Tesla in 2013, where he oversaw production of the Tesla Model 3 auto until this May.

Turkish lira slumps to new record low as Donald Trump doubles tariffs
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan struck a defiant note in a series of Twitter messages shortly before Trump's announcement. At one point, it was down as much as 19 percent on the day, before rallying a bit to bring it to "only" a 13.7 percent loss.

Field was formerly the VP for Hardware Engineering in 2013 when he left the company to join Tesla as the VP for Vehicle Programs before he was promoted to chief engineer in 2014.

Apple has been tight lipped about their self-driving cars. Apple spokesperson Tom Neumayr confirmed that Field had returned to the company but did not reveal what project he was working on. That fits with what Apple does: produces all its own hardware and sells them directly to consumers.

Although Apple does sit on an enormous pile of cash (some $158.8bn in April), nothing in the record, or in even the rumour mill, remotely suggests that Apple is building a "self-driving" or autonomous vehicle (very 2014).

In 2017 while being interviewed by Bloomberg the CEO of Apple Tim Cook spoke about the company's involvement in autonomous systems and hinted at Apple's involvement in autonomous cars. A month later, Tesla founder Elon Musk installed a makeshift assembly line tent outside the Tesla. Musk made the announcement via Twitter on Tuesday.
