"It's always an honor to represent your country", Thomas said. But there is no doubt that this week for the 100th running of this tournament it is to be largely seen within the Ryder Cup prism.

"Knowing him very well, he tees it up every week to try and win tournaments and I would like to see something from him. The 2017 Masters champion is 20th in European points and 12th on the world ranking points standings.

The eight automatic qualifiers for the American team will be set after the conclusion of the final major of the season.

"We're looking at 51,000 fans coming to these events each day". Nonetheless, as auditions go, this will be a big one for two players hoping to compete in their first Ryder Cup.

Thomas secured his place Sunday by winning the WGC Bridgestone Invitational, joining world number one Dustin Johnson, reigning Masters champion Patrick Reed and two-time US Open victor Brooks Koepka. "The buzz that was around The Open Championship... that would be great for the Ryder Cup as well". Tiger Woods is 20th.

Even if his standings shift this week, Furyk faces some interesting decisions.

Tiger Woods has already been named a Team USA vice-captain for this year's Ryder Cup, but the former world No.1 is more focussed on playing in France in September.

Decisions, decisions. Furyk will name three of his captain's selections following the PGA Tour's second FedEx Cup playoff event outside Boston (Dell Technologies), which concludes September 3. Six days later, he will add the final player following the BMW Championship. There will be tough calls to make, but Furyk is excited to see what unfolds.

"We would have to kick him out of some meetings, probably, (and) he has been so instrumental in helping us with pairings and ideas and game plan", Love said. You want the guys who are in good form. But what you have to keep reminding yourself as a player is you really have a job to do this week.

US captain Jim Furyk is still scheduled to compete. He and Furyk share the same management company, which has provided Furyk a window into an intelligent young player who turns 25 next month. We put a lot of pressure on players. "We know what side Bryson is on compared to the rest of us".

It's been 25 years since the US, which possesses the chalice at the moment, has won a Ryder Cup on foreign soil - 1993 at the Belfry in England. Winning in France will not be easy.

Degenerative eye conditions linked to Alzheimer's in study
Lee said anything happening in the eye may relate to what's happening in the brain, an extension of the central nervous system. Throughout a five-year study period, they diagnosed almost 800 of those monitored with Alzheimer's.

Of the current top eight, only Thomas has never played in a Ryder Cup and Koepka has never played in a road Ryder Cup.

Europe and the US will play the biennial event at Le National in Paris from September 28-30.

"I did not ask for that pairing, " Furyk said. "I've been part of Ryder Cups since 1997 and I've not gone into a Ryder Cup where the United States don't have a great team".

European captain Thomas Bjorn has been encouraged by some strong play from his players the past few months.

Rory McIlroy's only complaint about his season is that he's not winning enough. Tommy Fleetwood has become a force.

"It really is a thinker's golf course", Bjorn said.

Garcia has been the beating heart of the European side for almost two decades but he is now well outside the top eight spots and the automatic cut off for the team.

DeChambeau now sits at No. 9 on the points list. "I understand why Europeans like it so much, why they've been so fond of the course and talk so highly about it. So it doesn't come as a surprise to me or to the team that's going to play for the European side, but the American team is going to be great". "I'm happy to be in that position, because you want people to push themselves right to the end". "But what you have to keep reminding yourself as a player is you really have a job to do this week".

Garcia, 38, is not the only European stalwart outside the qualifying bubble, with Swede Henrik Stenson and Englishman Ian Poulter also battling to make the team.

In singles, however, where he can be the lone wolf, Woods is 4-1-2, hardly a co-incidence one would think. There are some good signs here and there, and he can turn it around very quickly'. He had the lead on the back nine on Sunday at Carnoustie before fading into a tie for sixth.
