  • Security forces in Salt Jordan raiding a suspected terrorist hideout

The Jordanian Interior Ministry said in a statement on Saturday that the blast hit a security patrol in the Christian-majority town of al-Fuheis, located 20 kilometers northwest of Amman, on Friday evening.

Security forces have been extra vigilant since the start of this year with warnings that sympathisers of Islamic State could launch revenge attacks after the militants were driven out of most of the territory they once controlled in Syria and Iraq.

Jordanian security forces collected the bodies of three suspected militants on Sunday out of a partially collapsed building in a city in central Jordan following a shoot, a goverment spokeswoman said.

Security forces chasing the suspects zeroed in on a multi-story building in the town of Salt, near Fuheis, and attempted to storm it.

One of the buildings had been rigged with explosives, said government spokeswoman Jumana Ghuneimat.

Jordan said on Saturday four people were killed during a police raid on a house sheltering militants suspected of being behind a bomb attack on a police van.

"The suspects refused to surrender and opened heavy fire toward a joint security force", Ghneimat said.

Ambulances were seen rushing to the main city hospital from near the building in a residential area of Salt that was sealed off by police, Reuters reported.

Ghuneimat said three suspects were arrested and searches continued for others. In December 2016, a shootout at a Crusader castle in the southern town of Karak left 14 people dead, including seven members of the security forces, four attackers and three civilians.

The security forces were investigating if the militants were part of a wider sleeper cell network of Islamist radicals that had planned a series of attacks, an official source said.

No group has claimed responsibility for Friday's attack in Fuhais on the van in which one policeman was killed and six others were injured.

Prime Minister Omar al-Razzaz pledged that Jordan would "not be complacent in the hunt for terrorists".

Jordan is a close Western ally in a turbulent region, and has been largely spared from the conflicts in neighboring Syria and Iraq.

"Jordan will always be at the forefront of the fight against terrorism and obscurantist ideas, which target the lives of innocents and try to undermine security and stability", the official Petra news agency quoted him as saying.
