Retired Brazilian striker Ronaldo has been hospitalised with pneumonia on the Spanish holiday island of Ibiza and is recovering well, a local newspaper reported Sunday (Aug 12).

According to the Diario de Ibiza, he has now been admitted to the ICU of the Nuestra Señora del Rosario Polyclinic.

The newspaper's sources said the ex-footballer was still in intensive care, but was making good progress. The hospital could not immediately be reached by Reuters for comment.

Pneumonia affects the lungs and is caused by bacterial infection.

Symptoms - which include a cough and difficulty breathing - can develop suddenly over 24 to 48 hours.

Diario de Ibiza said that Ronaldo, 41, was recovering well.

Ronaldo went down with dengue fever in January 2012 and posted a picture of himself on Twitter hooked up to a drip in hospital alongside the message: "Good morning to all those who began the New Year with dengue".

Considered one of the best strikers of his generation, Ronaldo played for a host of top European clubs including Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Barcelona. Throughout a prosperous career, he scored 62 goals in 98 global appearances for Brazil.

He won his first cap for Brazil as a 17-year-old and went on to score 62 goals in 97 worldwide appearances, including both goals when Brazil beat Germany 2-0 in the 2002 World Cup final.

Since retirement, however, he has battled thyroid problems and gained significant weight.
