  • Florida state algae red tide

Jason Beisel with the city of Clearwater says crews and trucks on standby to deal with the tons of dead marine wildlife as red tide is foretasted to spread to Pinellas, however, the message is their beach is open.

The red tide is a collection of microscopic algae that is often red when in high concentrations and it produces toxins than can harm and sometimes kill sea life.

Florida's governor has directed some $700,000 to help kill the algae around Fort Meyers alone, but said more needs to be done.

But it's not happening just in Florida.

The "Red Tide" is now hitting Florida's coast and is spreading, causing the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to warn coastal states of a rise in toxic algae. NOAA also said the current situation started nine months ago, making it the longest-lasting Gulf of Mexico bloom in over a decade.

In some cases, the algae can be harmful to people causing breathing issues, eye irritation or asthma.
