There are no official far-right protests planned in town this weekend, but the city's downtown area has been closed to traffic, and the University of Virginia, where hundreds of white supremacists marched with flaming torches past year, is restricting access to parts of its campus.

Several dozen demonstrators from the so-called "antifa", or anti-fascist, movement marched to the spot where Heather Heyer was killed previous year when a man linked to white supremacist groups rammed his auto into counter-protestors.

In Charlottesville on Saturday, hundreds of marched against racism through the city's streets. Bellamy told the police commander that the students were upset by the officers' tactics, calling the officers' riot gear "over the top".

Then, hundreds of white nationalists and even more counter protesters will demonstrate near the White House Sunday.

Both groups have been given permission to demonstrate in separate sections of Lafayette Square, a shady park that looks onto the back of the U.S. president's residence.

Members of the leftist Answer Coalition plan a "mass action" to protest the white nationalists.

Mayor Muriel Bowser and Police Chief Peter Newsham have promised a massive security mobilization to keep protesters and counter-protesters apart.

Some nearby businesses, such as the Lincoln restaurant, said they will close early on Sunday to avoid any conflict or confrontations.

"Our goal is to prevent that from occurring". But that plan was abandoned when the union representing Metro's workers, predominantly people of color, made clear that they did not want to provide special arrangements for racists. The National Park Service (NPS) has granted official permits to multiple counter-protests in Washington D.C. During last year's rallies, law enforcement officers stood by while white supremacists clashed with counter-protesters, a response that allowed the violence to spiral out of control, an independent investigation found.
