A US Marine was reported missing in the Sulu Sea, triggering an "all-hands" rescue operation in an area where local terrorist group Abu Sayyaf Group operates.

The United States Navy reported that they are now conducting an "all-hands effort" search for a United States Marine that fell overboard while the ship he was on was conduction operations off the coast of the Philippines in the Sulu Sea.

"To date, multiple searches have been conducted inside the ship while embarked aircraft aboard the USS Essex conduct round-the-clock search and rescue operations within the Sulu Sea and Surigao Strait", the unit said in its press release.

The Philippine government facilitated diplomatic clearance for U.S. assets involved in the search and rescue operation.

In a statement, the US Embassy said the Marine was assigned to the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) aboard USS Essex.

"A United States marine fell from a U.S. ship while traversing Philippine waters". Navy, Marine Corps and Philippine ships and aircraft are all involved in the search, which will continue "until every option has been exhausted", according to a post on the 13th MEU's Facebook page.

The unidentified Marine is deployed with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit based out of Camp Pendleton.

"As of now, there is still no update if the Marine is already recovered", Lorenzana said. It has also sought the assistance of the Philippine Coast Guard, which immediately deployed a ship on Thursday.

According to military officials, the Marine's family members have been notified as to the situation.

American and Philippine forces are scouring the waters in the Pacific for a lost Marine, reported missing during joint military drills of the Philippines' southwest coastline, officials at Marine Corps headquarters said Friday.

"It is an all-hands effort to find our missing Marine", said U.S. Navy Capt. Gerald Olin, commander of Amphibious Squadron One and the officer in charge of the search mission.
