Armed with a two-shot lead overnight, Koepka made a confident start when he holed from eight feet for birdie at the first, but he opened the door for the chasing pack when errant drives at the fourth and fifth led to bogeys and trimmed his advantage to one. But Scott was playing his best golf in years, determined to show his top form in honor of countryman Jarrod Lyle, who had passed away from leukemia the night before the tournament started.

After completing his storm-delayed second round earlier in the day, Woods thrilled the galleries at the Bellerive Country Club by ripping through the first nine holes in just 31 shots to move within two shots of the lead. Eastern tee time, begins the day at 8-under and is one of 10 golfers within range of Brooks Koepka, the leader at 12-under.

Sometimes you win the major and sometimes the major wins you - the former would be an accurate depiction of Koepka's performance.

"I left pretty much every single putt short on the back nine", he said.

Gary Woodland almost buried his PGA Championship hopes in sand with a triple bogey horror show in the bunkers on Saturday but dug himself out of trouble to remain in contention for a first major title.

But he was there on Sunday, getting stronger as the day went on, and making it very hard for Jim Furyk not to pick him for the Ryder Cup team in a few weeks. Across Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Woods put together a career run through 54 holes.

But as the leaderboard became increasingly congested behind him, with 30 players within five shots of the lead midway through the round, Koepka proved his major quality as he bounced back with three consecutive birdies from the seventh which capped an outward 33.

Ten in hospital after Manchester shooting
A carnival in the area had finished some hours before the incident, it was reported. TEN people have been injured after a shooting incident in Manchester .

A spectacular birdie at the 17th kept his victory hopes alive, but a closing par saw him card a one-under 70 and finish one shot behind Paul Casey, who stormed through the field with a 65.

That left Woodland a shot behind Kisner going into the front nine - where the pair continued to exchange the lead in a thrilling battle. Seemed like everybody was between 2- and 4- or 5-under par.

You need only to see the tail to understand why.

Thousands of spectators watched Woods sink a 17-foot birdie putt on the first hole and drop his approach to four feet setting up a birdie at the second.

Woods and Koepka played nine holes of a practice round on Wednesday, and the 14-time major champion knew what he was up against.

Koepka never imagined a year like this. He's won the PGA four times, the last in 2007. He shot 68 and tied for sixth.

Woods' front nine charge - 4-under - came to a screeching halt on the back.
