She survived the shooting but her suicide attempt put her on a journey to become the youngest person in the United States to receive a face transplant.

"To call my surgeons, physicians, nurses and caregivers "world class" would be an understatement", she said. The nerves connecting her brain to the newly introduced facial muscles are still growing, so she struggles to move many features. Stubblefield lost her face by her own hand: As an 18-year-old high school senior dealing with medical issues, her mother's job loss, and a breakup, she impulsively shot herself in the face with a.308-caliber hunting rifle in 2014. Though she tried to live a normal life, people would stare and whisper to each other about her face.

Yet overall, the young woman's story is one of rousing success in the field of cutting-edge medicine and of the fantastic human connections formed between physicians and patients. A year ago, the Cleveland Clinic performed a face transplant on the youngest patient to date, who was 21 at the time.

One of the surgeons behind the transplant, Dr Brian Gastman, said: "Her whole story made our team come together much faster, and we sort of ran toward her to take care of her".

Like all other face transplant recipients, Stubblefield will be on anti-rejection medication for the rest of her life.

However, the skin grafts kept falling off, and doctors soon suggested the idea of a "face transplant" to her parents.

The bridge, the Morandi, forms part of the A10 motorway, connecting Genoa to Ventimiglia near the French border. Italian news agency Ansa reported that a child was among the dead.

Five weeks after Katie almost died from the gunshot wound, she arrived at the Cleveland Clinic in dire need of reconstructive surgery.

Before her full transplant, she went through 22 different surgeries to try and reconstruct her face.

Now 22, Stubblefield admits that when she was first told about a face transplant, she had no idea the procedure even existed.

Fourteen months later, a donor was found: Adrea Schneider, a 31-year-old woman who died of a drug overdose, National Geographic reported.

She has said that she doesn't remember much of that year - including being hospitalized in Oxford, Mississippi; being flown to another hospital in Memphis, Tennessee; and then being transferred to Cleveland Clinic in OH, where she would undergo her face transplantation three years later.

The operation was the Cleveland Clinic's third face transplant and the 40 in the world.

"I'm definitely taking many, many daily steps", she added about the recovery process. "When my parents helped explain everything to me, I was very excited to get a face again and to have function again". She hopes to go to college and eventually find a career in counselling and motivational speaking. "With a new nose, lips, palate, eyelids and jaw, she now has the full opportunity to re-integrate into society and have a future just like any other young adult".
