A bus carrying travelers from Colombia and Venezuela crashed in Ecuador early Tuesday, killing 24 people and injuring 18 others, officials said.

The Colombian-registered bus was travelling to Quito when it hit a smaller vehicle in an area known as dead man's curve at about 3am local time, Ecuadorean authorities said.

The bus collided with an SUV carrying five people, three of whom died. Also killed were three children, he said.

A small fleet of ambulances and emergency workers rushed to the crash site about two hours from Quito before dawn. Police are still investigating the cause of the crash.

Identification of bodies has begun and injured passengers, including several hurt seriously, were taken to hospitals in Quito, according to firefighters.

Afghan officials: Taliban attack in north kills 30 troops
In a short message on social media, the Taliban spokesman posted that the group's "mujahideen have no links with Kabul incident". Hundreds of people have fled the fighting in Ghazni, which has killed about 100 members of the Afghan security forces.

The dead included an unspecified number of Venezuelans and Colombians, whose embassies were notified of the accident outside Quito, they said.

The bus, which had foreign license plates, was on a downward stretch of highway 30 kilometers (20 miles) east of Quito when it struck an all-terrain vehicle and overturned, slamming into three houses on the side of the road, officials said.

On Monday, relatives of the victims bid farewell to their loved ones at a collective wake held at Barcelona's stadium in Guayaquil.

On average, 13 people die each day on Ecuador's roads, according to the highway safety organization Road Justice.

Official figures suggest 96% of accidents in Ecuador are caused by human error.
