Restant "en contact avec les autorités italiennes afin de déterminer la présence éventuelle d'autres Français parmi les victimes", le ministère a par ailleurs communiqué sur le numéro à joindre pour contacter son Centre de crise et de soutien: le 01.53.59.11.00. Dans l'enchevêtrement de béton et de ferraille, on déplore au moins 25 morts, dont un enfant, et de nombreux blessés dont 9 dans un état très grave.

Au lendemain de la catastrophe de Gênes, les médias italiens donnent un bilan provisoire de 31 morts.

L'effondrement soudain et encore inexpliqué de cet ouvrage massif en béton des années 1960, appelé pont Morandi du nom de son concepteur, a précipité environ 35 voitures et quelques camions dans le vide d'une hauteur de 45 mètres. Ce viaduc autoroutier était très fréquenté, mais aussi connu pour ses problèmes récurrents. Plus tôt, le ministre italien de l'Intérieur évoquait "une trentaine de morts".

Le journal italien rapporte que les jeunes amis étaient partis de Montpellier (Hérault) pour se rendre à un teknival en Sardaigne. La région de Ligurie, dont Gênes est la capitale, a annoncé qu'un blessé était décédé en salle d'opération.

"C'est une catastrophe qui a frappé Gênes et toute l'Italie".

A la tombée de la nuit, dans un amas impressionnant de tôles et de béton, des centaines de secouristes fouillaient les décombres du viaduc avec l'aide de chiens, à la recherche de survivants. Plus de 200 pompiers sont mobilisés sur les lieux de l'accident. "Les 240 pompiers engagés vont se relayer toute la nuit en travaillant à la lumière des projecteurs".

Un pompier français venu en renfort, Patrick Villardry, a souligné la grande difficulté de ces opérations. Les secours redoutent qu'il y ait plusieurs dizaines de victimes.

Le ministre des Transports et des Infrastructures, Danilo Toninelli, a évoqué "une immense tragédie". Luigi Di Maio, vice-Premier ministre et chef de file du Mouvement 5 étoiles (M5S, populiste), a accusé Autostrade per l'Italia, la société concessionnaire de l'essentiel des 6.000 km d'autoroutes du pays, filiale du groupe Atlantia, d'être responsable de la catastrophe, la pire en Europe depuis cinq ans, pour ne pas avoir effectué la maintenance nécessaire.

D'abord sous la pluie, puis de nuit et désormais sous le soleil, les sauveteurs luttent sans relâche pour tenter de trouver des survivants sous les débris.
