  • The aftermath of the suicide bomb attack in Kabul

Afghan authorities revised down on Thursday the death toll from a suicide bomb attack on an educational center in Kabul to 34 from 48, health ministry officials said.

There has been no claim of responsibility but the Taliban denied carrying it out.

On Wednesday, a police source in Baghlan said that at least 35 Afghan National Army (ANA) officers and ten policemen were killed when the Taliban launched an attack on a military base in Baghlan-e-Markazi district on Tuesday night.

The attack on the training facility was the latest incident in a blood-soaked week that saw militants deliver crippling blows to government forces across Afghanistan.

Hundreds of people have fled the fighting in Ghazni, which has also killed about 100 members of the Afghan security forces.

An industrial-sized digger helped soften the arid ground for the fresh graves as men removed rocks from the soil with pickaxes.

Separately, six girls younger than 10 were killed when an unexploded mortar they picked up to play with suddenly exploded on Wednesday, officials in the eastern province of Laghman said. The assault on Ghazni was widely seen as a show of force ahead of possible peace talks with the US, which has been at war in Afghanistan for almost 17 years. The blast, which shattered weeks of relative calm in Kabul, also wounded at least 67, including both male and female students. The attacks have left more than 240 people dead.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the assault.

Analysts have suggested the Taliban may be trying to shore up its position before any potential negotiations by proving they can hit government installations at will.

Mohammad Arif Shahjahan, an MP from Ghazni, told CNN Monday Taliban fighters had taken control of key buildings, including the police headquarters and some government offices.

He said the security forces and civilians have not suffered casualties during the attack.

The move perhaps the most serious challenge to the government's hold in urban areas since the Taliban briefly occupied the city of Kunduz in 2015, and comes at a time when the Trump administration appears to be accelerating negotiations with an insurgency it has been fighting for 17 years. "The fighting killed more than 120 security forces and civilians and more than 200 insurgents".

Militant attacks and suicide bombings were the leading causes of civilian deaths in the first half of 2018, a recent United Nations report showed.
