Pogba: Brighton was ‘hungrier’ than Man United

  • Brighton's Pascal Gross put the cap on their victory over Manchester United with a penalty. Brighton won 3-2

Pogba, who scored in United's 3-2 defeat by Brighton on Sunday, plunged his future into doubt last week when he hinted that his relationship with manager Jose Mourinho was far from flawless.

Romelu Lukaku briefly halved the deficit but a clumsy challenge from Eric Bailly allowed Pascal Gross to restore Albion's two-goal lead with a penalty, before Paul Pogba converted an inconsequential stoppage-time spot-kick.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Pogba said: "We lost and the attitude that we had I thought we deserved to win".

Speaking after his side's 6-1 thrashing of Huddersfield on Sunday, Guardiola said: "That is true, you can not buy class".

And Mourinho revealed it was hard to lift his side at the break as United's confidence was severely damaged by the hapless showings of Bailly and defensive partner Victor Lindelof.

Jose Mourinho's men had a relatively easy fixture on paper for their second match of the season but failed to grab any points.

Barely two minutes had passed before defender Shane Duffy made it 2-0 with a low drive.

A surly Mourinho spent the buildup to this clash choosing to criticise rivals Manchester City's fly-on-the-wall documentary released this week, saying "you can't buy class" in reaction to the behind-the-scenes account of last season at the Etihad Stadium.

Brighton´s failure to defend set-pieces cost them in a 2-0 defeat to Watford last weekend and threatened to undo their good work again when Lukaku was left unmarked just five yards out to nod home Luke Shaw´s deflected cross and give United a lifeline. Lukaku could be in line for a start leading the line in Brighton.

"Especially that third goal - we expected to come [in at half-time] at 2-1 with positivity - then the third goal killed us off in the second half". In the second half, he was deployed in a deeper position after Pereira and Mata were replaced by attacking England duo Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford.

Pogba's injury-time penalty, after Marouane Fellaini was brought down, came too late to matter. His time at Old Trafford threatens to go the same way, particularly with Tottenham next up a week on Monday.

Guardiola also had some big praise for striker Sergio Aguero, who scored a hat-trick for City on Sunday in their 6-1 demolition of Huddersfield Town.

Having left Real Madrid after orchestrating a third Champions League title, Zinedine Zidane is now enjoying a well-earned break, but the former French World Cup victor is sure to relish a chance to show his managerial abilities, should the United job come up.
