In a tribute, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, recalled the 2001 Nobel Peace Award given to Mr Annan and the United Nations and said it was in recognition of his humility, selflessness and great contribution to humanity and the promotion of peace.

In his retirement, despite being at the forefront of diffusing volatile situations in Africa as a member of the Elders Club, his detractors have always blamed him for simply fiddling his fingers as the 1994 genocide in Rwanda raged.

Ghanaians bid farewell to former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Thursday in a state funeral attended by African leaders and global statesmen who hailed his record as an advocate for humanity and world peace.

His body was flown to Accra on Monday and about 6,000 people, converged at the Accra International Conference Centre to pay their last respects to the Nobel laureate. "It was marvellous in our eyes, it was one of these things that we can only dream. he lifted Africa and showed that we are also able to do great things", Kitcher told AFP.

"He made the whole world understand promoting equality between men and women is not an issue of women only, but it's an issue for sustainable development", she said.

As post-poll violence ravaged the country leaving thousands dead and many more displaced, Annan arrived in Nairobi with the backing of various global bodies. "His was a life well-lived", President Akufo-Addo added.

Pointing to his time at the helm of the UN, Guterres said Annan had an nearly mystical sense of the role of the UN as a force for good in a world of ills.

Many commuters in the capital wore black as a sign of respect.

Scores of world leaders past and present, as well as royalty, are expected in Accra for Annan's funeral on Thursday.

Annan's body will remain at Accra Conference Centre until the burial ceremony that will take place at Burma Camp military cemetery.
