Giant spider-web cloaks Greece coast

Those suffering from Arachnophobia or who are just not fond of the eight-legged creatures should, for a while, stay clear of visiting Western Greece, where a 300-meter-long cobweb covered the coastal area in the town of Aitoliko. The trio of conditions were quite ideal for the spiders, which made quick work of the shrubbery, transforming it into their own mating den.

The web that spans 1,000 feet is thought to be the product of spiders that belong to the Tetragnatha family, also known as stretch spiders due to their elongated bodies.

A spider web spanning almost 1,000ft has appeared in Greece, where locals say unusually high mosquito activity took place before the web appeared.

The rapid creation of such webs is said to be unusual, but not completely unheard of.

Molecular Biologist Maria Chatzaki said: "These spiders are not unsafe for humans and will not cause any damage to the area's flora".

She noted that the phenomena had been seen before in the region in 2003, and that the spiders would soon die off, and the web would degrade naturally, leaving the vegetation undamaged.

"When an animal finds abundant food, high temperatures and sufficient humidity, it has the ideal conditions to be able to make large populations".
