Disney CEO Confirms Slowdown Is Coming For Star Wars Movies

21 Septembre, 2018, 03:40 | Auteur: Christine Menetries

Disney CEO Bob Iger said he stands by the controversial decisions to cancel ABC's Roseanne and sever ties with Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn in the wake of offensive comments.

When questioned about the resulting backlash, Iger said he still supports the choices made be his executives: "I haven't second-guessed their decision".

He added "that doesn't mean we're not going to make films ..."

The next Star Wars movie in the works is The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams' is busy making Episode IX, which is now shooting in the United Kingdom with plans to be in theaters in December 2019. "But I think we're going to be a little bit more careful about volume and timing". "And the buck stops here on that".

Disney had promised a new "Star Wars" movie every year after the hotly-anticipated release of "The Force Awakens" in 2015, alternating between chapters in the main Skywalker saga launched in the 1970s and one-off films.

That's not to say that Star Wars content is going to be disappearing.

Timing and details of those projects hasn't been confirmed, and its still possible some may not actually happen, especially after the struggles of Solo led to a reevaluation of standalone films.

In responding to Belloni, Iger referred to the upcoming "Star Wars" film series from the "Game of Thrones" cocreators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss and detailed the "mistake" he believes he made in the "Star Wars" release strategy, along with his subsequent approach to a "slowdown".

Meanwhile, over at Disney's other billion-dollar entertainment property, plans are in motion to incorporate the Marvel properties owned by Fox into those owned by Disney. Disney's new streaming service has just ordered some new Marvel Cinematic Universe shows for the platform, which could very well send the MCU into the Star Wars territory of fatigue. But who knows? Maybe this is just Iger positioning his company's chess pieces in the public eye - it's actually surprising to see his admission of failure on Solo outside an investor call.
