DOWN Barclays bank experienced problems today

Customers started reporting problems at around 5am on Friday and a statement issued later that morning by the bank said the issues had been resolved.

Barclays' customers have complained about late payments and problems accessing accounts after it blamed a "technical hitch" for internet and telephone banking outages.

Earlier, chief executive Ross McEwan said the bank feels customers' "pain" when problems arise with its systems - but he added that such incidents were becoming less frequent.

In a statement, RBS said: "We are aware that customers are now experiencing issues logging into their online and mobile banking accounts".

On Twitter, a number of customers have complained that they are unable to make business payments.

Some customers tweeted their frustration throughout the day.

Paul Girling told the BBC: "A significant payment due into my account has gone missing. It has been confirmed as sent but not received".

A Barclays spokeswoman told the BBC: "Our priority yesterday was to get services back online for customers". One businessman in Sheffield, Chris Williams, called the downed service, "Incredibly frustrating", and that they "will be left with several unhappy workers to deal with".

A customer, Charlotte Vella, criticised the bank for not forewarning customers on social media, saying: "numerous people [have been] turned away from carrying out basic transactions".

The lender used Twitter to apologize to customers and said telephone banking and ATMs were working as normal.

These latest outages in banking services comes only months after a long period of IT issues which blocked TSB customers out of their bank accounts.
