Wansink emailed The Washington Post on Thursday a news release of his retirement, which included statements attributed to a university trustee saying that "Cornell and Professor Wansink mutually have decided that Professor Wansink's research approach and goals differ from the academic expectations of Cornell University, and they have chose to part ways accordingly".

JAMA's editorial board from its network of prestigious publications on Wednesday, September 19.

Before Kotlikoff's statement was released, Wansink told CNN that the latest retractions caught him off-guard.

Through those studies he gained the accolade that puts a stamp of approval on a scientist's work: citations (to be specific: he was cited in more than 20,000 other research papers). Cornell opened another investigation into Wansink's work past year, BuzzFeed reported.

The university said in a statement that a year-long review found that Brian Wansink "committed academic misconduct in his research and scholarship, including misreporting of research data, problematic statistical techniques, failure to properly document and preserve research results, and inappropriate authorship". He was a driving force behind the 100-calorie snack packet. A 2017 review of four of Wansink's studies said that the "attempt to digest" them was "statistical heartburn". "From what my coauthors and I believed, the independent analyses of our data sets confirmed all of our published findings".

The controversy surrounding Wansink's research was brewing for some time. Prime among those researchers is of Leiden University in the Netherlands.

Brian Wansink says he never committed fraud and that the issues identified by the university's investigation were relatively minor.

"The way he talked about his research was highly questionable", van der Zee said.

At the time, about Wansink's dieting studies and the indigestion it was causing.

In a statement published today, Howard Bauchner, MD, editor in cief of JAMA, said the journal opened its investigation after concerns were raised in May, and finally received word from Cornell University that they can not support Dr Wansink's work.

But since then, things have gotten worse for Wansink. "Their response states: 'We regret that, because we do not have access to the original data, we can not assure you that the results of the studies are valid.' Therefore, the 6 articles reporting the results of these studies that were published in JAMA, JAMA Internal Medicine, and JAMA Pediatrics are hereby retracted".

Although retracted articles account for far less than 1% of published papers, they can have an outsize impact. And a study from 2014 was reported as finding that the and thus ate more. People eat more when they're served foods in large bowls, he wrote, and when they're watching an action movie, and when they sit close to the buffet at an all-you-can-eat restaurant. The other, published in 2013, claimed rather than made decisions in the lunch line, where they can smell less-healthy entrees.

On Thursday, he tendered his resignation after 14 years with the university, effective June 30, 2019.

"All his methods are so unethical that I can't understand how an institution like Cornell could keep him on as a professor and keep paying him", Arianna Ulloa, a former student and intern in Wansink's lab, told The Cornell Daily Sun in March. He has been removed from all teaching and research. "Instead, he will be obligated to spend his time cooperating with the university in its ongoing review of his prior research", the statement read.
