Two stores have already opened, located in former Tesco stores in Chatteris, Cambridgeshire and Immingham, Lincolnshire.
"The intention is for us to be cheapest in town", CEO Dave Lewis said at the event in Chatteris, England.
Commenting on the announcement, John Perry, managing director of SCALA, a leading provider of management services for the supply chain and logistics sector, said, "With discount retailers Lidl and Aldi reported to control around 13 per cent of the United Kingdom grocery market, it's no surprise that retail giant Tesco has launched its own discount chain, Jack's". Tesco is investing £20 million to £25 million on the format.
Neil Wilson, chief market analyst at Markets.com, said of the launch: "I think having a separate brand is really interesting as it allows it to offer different products at different price points without affecting its core Tesco brand".
As part of the Jack's store presence, Tesco also will launch Jack's branded goods, a unique range of staple food items that presents shoppers with quality and value.
Perhaps Tesco can learn from its rivals' failed attempts at thriving in the discounter market.
