  • ABC managing director Michelle Guthrie who replaced Mark Scott

"I am devastated by the Board's decision to terminate my employment despite no claim of wrongdoing on my part", she said in a statement. And why did The Australian break the news, thus insinuating the ABC's employees weren't among the first o know?

Michelle Guthrie, one of the highest profile women executives in global television, has been fired as managing director of public broadcaster, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

Chairman Justin Milne said fresh leadership would benefit the organisation in the long term.

Appearing on ABC television on Monday, Mr Milne refused to detail the "ins and outs" of why the managing director was sacked, but said the board wanted a different "leadership style".

Guthrie's CV includes senior roles at News International and Google, a combination of old and new media that was seen as positioning the ABC to continue its digital evolution.

"This decision has been driven by our commitment to deliver the best possible outcomes for our loyal audiences and the best possible experience for our own people".

He said Ms Guthrie had been "pretty good on the digital stuff", but the ABC needed to commit "wholeheartedly" to an expensive plan known was Project Jetstream, which would create a digital infrastructure for the ABC's long-term future.

Student pilot charged with attempt to steal plane
Maintenance employees confronted him in the cockpit and forced him off the plane, detaining him until the authorities arrived. The man's motive was unknown, Gillespie said, after police searched his home and vehicle and found no weapons or explosives.

Guthrie, who was only about halfway through her contract, has been under fire from critics outside the organisation and within it. "I am considering my legal options".

ABC managing director Michelle Guthrie has been sacked effective immediately because it was "not in the best interests" of the broadcaster for her to stay in the job.

Guthrie replaced Mark Scott as managing director in May 2016, after he had previously remained in charge for a decade.

David Anderson, a 30-year veteran of the ABC, will be acting managing director while a formal search process involving internal and external candidates begins.

The communications minister, Mitch Fifield, thanked Guthrie and said he "acknowledges her service in what is a challenging and rapidly changing media environment".

Michelle Guthrie has been dumped as the ABC's managing director, after the board decided it "was not in the best of the interests" of the broadcaster for her to finish her term.

Guthrie has been a divisive figure during her tenure as ABC boss.
