A judge in the sentencing hearing of Bill Cosby ruled Tuesday that the comedian is a "sexually violent predator". His name will appear on a sex-offender registry sent to neighbors, schools and victims.
"He seemingly thinks that he hasn't done anything wrong".
"Nobody is above the law", Steele said.
"The suggestion that Mr. Cosby is unsafe is not supported by anything other than the frenzy", Green said, as demonstrators gathered outside the suburban Philadelphia courthouse. "Eighty-one-year-old blind men who are not self-sufficient are not a danger, unless perhaps to themselves".
The classification means that Cosby must undergo lifetime counseling and report quarterly to authorities.
If he must serve time, he could be taken into custody immediately after the judge pronounces the sentence.
Cosby was convicted on three counts of aggravated indecent assault, a crime punishable by a maximum sentence of between five and 10 years in prison. The comic once known as America's Dad faced anywhere from probation to 10 years in prison after being convicted in April in the first celebrity trial of the #MeToo era. Judges are allowed to issue sentences beyond those guidelines. A number of accusers, including model Janice Dickinson, were on hand for the sentencing hearing, which is expected to last two days. O'Neill's ruling on Cosby's status will not impact the ultimate sentence.
Cosby's lawyers had fought the "sexually violent predator" designation, arguing that Pennsylvania's sex-offender law remains unconstitutional despite several revisions.
Cosby spokesman Andrew Wyatt said the former TV star planned to remain silent when given the opportunity to address the court Tuesday. Cosby didn't testify at either of his two trials.
Cosby did not testify at the trial and has spoken publicly only infrequently since his criminal trial began.
But no matter what the Constand family wants, with the lawyers' arguments on both sides and Cosby's inevitable appeal looming, that 30-year lockup just isn't going to happen.
Defense attorney Joseph Green started the second day of Cosby's sentencing hearing by getting a psychologist for the state to acknowledge it's possible Cosby is in "full remission" from a psychological disorder she says gives him the uncontrollable urge to assault women. Mr. Cosby heard me. He is now under house arrest and out on $1 million bail.
