Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos return to the Midwest, where they have exclusive access to Steven Avery and his co-defendant and nephew Brendan Dassey, their families and the legal teams fighting for justice on their behalf.

Since being released, we've provided extensive coverage of Dassey and Avery's search for justice, and there's more to come as Season 2 of the Emmy Award-winning documentary is coming to Netflix on 19 October.

In the second part, viewers will meet Avery's new lawyer, Kathleen Zellner, and watch her quest to prove Avery was wrongly convicted during the murder trial of Teresa Halbach.

Making a Murderer was written and directed by Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos, who spent 10 years filming and editing the first 10 episodes that became part one of the series. Both men were sentenced to life in prison.

In 2005, Avery was then arrested on charges of murdering Teresa Halbach, a local photographer. Avery's lawyers argued that the prosecution's evidence was inconsistent, claiming they were attempting to frame Avery in retaliation to his lawsuit.

Two years later, Avery brought a US$36-million lawsuit against Manitowoc County, Wis., for the wrongful conviction.

Since the first series aired there have been numerous developments in the case.

We thought we'd seen the last of convicted murderer Steven Avery and his nephew accomplice, Brendan Dassey, after Avery was denied a retrial and Dassey's release from jail was blocked. However, Kratz was forced to resign as district attorney after several women came forward claiming he sexually harassed them.

Now, almost three full years later, fans will step foot back in the Making a Murderer realm and see how Avery has changed his tune, if at all since the last time viewers saw him, and if he has any thoughts or regrets about what happened to his nephew. But in December 2017, a court of appeals panel voted in favour of upholding his original conviction, in a vote that was split four to three. In 2016, a judge granted Avery's request allowing scientific testing to proceed in his case, but previous year, his request for a new trial was denied.

According to Digital Spy, she said: "It does not matter how long it takes, what it costs or what obstacles we have to overcome - our efforts to win Mr Avery's freedom will never stop".
