  • Iran strikes 'terrorist' targets in Syria with missiles, drones

A state TV-aired graphic suggested the missiles flew over central Iraq near the city of Tikrit before landing near the city of Abu Kamal, in the far southeastern region of Syria.

Albu Kamal itself, located on the border with Iraq, is held by regime forces and allied regional militiamen who seized it from IS in 2007. However, the city has been targeted even now by militants from Daesh group, who have lost nearly all the territory they once held in Syria and Iraq.

Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Baqeri made the remarks on Monday, hours after the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) said it had targeted terrorist positions to the east of the river Euphrates, near Albu Kamal town on Syria's eastern border with Iraq. The area of Hajin and IS militants there have been under attack for weeks by US-backed Kurdish-led fighters. Syrian state media did not immediately acknowledge the strike. Unlike Iran, he said, "professional" military forces such as those of the US -led coalition in Syria and of Russian Federation deconflict their operations to ensure maximum safety.

The Guard, a paramilitary group that answers directly to the supreme leader, said it followed the missiles with bombing runs by seven remotely piloted drones, a first for Iran.

The official spoke to the AP via text messages from Syria on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to journalists.

The report specified the missile launches came in retalliation to the Ahwaz attack, which killed at least 24 people - including members of the Revolutionary Guard - and wounded more than 60. The Arab separatists, who have long complained of discrimination in Persian-majority Iran, claimed the attack and provided accurate details about one of the attackers. The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Husky Energy goes hostile with $3.3B offer for MEG Energy
Peabody said on Monday that he does not believe other companies would gain the same benefits from an acquisition of MEG.

A statement on the Guard's website described those killed as "takfiri terrorists", a term it often uses to refer to the Islamic State. The separatists have not been known to work with ISIS in the past. "Several high-profile terrorists were killed during the attacks", he added.

The strike may have been for an entirely different audience, however.

Iranian state television broadcast footage of the missiles being launched, along with commentary saying they were a slap in the face toward Iran's foes, including the U.S., Israel and Saudi Arabia.

Four of the missiles were the Zulfiqar, which have a range of 750 kilometers (466 miles); two of the missiles were the Qiam, which have a range of 800 kilometers (497 miles). Iran poses a real danger to the people of #Kurdistan and the world. The United Nations says Iran still honors the terms of the accord, in which it limited its enrichment of uranium in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions. A year ago, it was 39,000 to $1.

"When Iran fires a ballistic missile from its homeland against a target in a foreign country, this means that Iran is not afraid of the prospects of retaliation, and has probably calculated that it will be safe", Taleblu said.

At least one of the missiles #Iran launched from outside the Kurdish city of Kermanshan exploded moments after it was sacked and landed in the outskirts of the city.
