"There are warnings for more than 300 miles of coastline". Conditions in the "very warm" Gulf of Mexico were expected to support continued strengthening, allowing Michael to become a major hurricane before it reaches the northern coast of the Gulf on Wednesday.

Michael underwent a period of "rapid intensification" on Sunday and Monday, its winds strengthening by more than 35 miles per hour.

The National Hurricane Center, citing Michael's unsafe trifecta of storm surge, flash flooding and winds, described the seventh hurricane of the Atlantic season as "life-threatening", and the Florida Division of Emergency Management warned on Twitter of the storm's "rapid intensification" ahead of landfall.

A life-threatening storm surge has been predicted along Florida's Gulf Coast, along with risky winds and heavy rainfall.

A hurricane warning was in effect for the Alabama-Florida border to the Suwannee River, with a hurricane watch in place from the Alabama-Florida border to the Mississippi-Alabama border.

A Storm Surge Watch is in effect for. It is expected to weaken as it moves up into the south-eastern United States. Tropical storm watches are in effect in some coastal areas of Mississippi, Florida, Georgia and SC. Severe storm surge is a possibility over a large portion of the Florida panhandle, with the highest surge expected to the right of the storm's track.

Residents of the U.S. state of Florida are boarding up homes and seeking evacuation routes away from Hurricane Michael, forecast to slam ashore midweek with life-threatening waves, winds and rains.

Gov. Rick Scott reiterated his warnings Monday evening during a news conference in Escambia County, encouraging residents along the coast to follow any evacuations orders as soon as possible.

"We can rebuild your home, but we cannot rebuild your life", Scott said. "There's nothing between us and this storm but warm water and I think that's what terrifies us about the potential impacts". "You need to evacuate if you're ordered to do so". "We're going to get storm surge, we have wind, we have a chance of flooding, we have a significant chance of tornadoes".

Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham said there were just hours left until Michael's wind gusts and rain bands would start whipping the coast.

Peaton says he's working closely with the National Weather Service to provide accurate information and protective measures to his county, which faces the Gulf of Mexico and is especially vulnerable to any flooding produced by Michael.
