  • Saudi writer 'murdered' in consulate

Tawakkol Karman, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate for 2011 holds a picture of missing Saudi writer Jamal Khashoggi as she speaks to journalists near the Saudi Arabia consulate, in Istanbul, Turkey.

Mr Al Otaibi said: "I would like to confirm that Jamal is not at the consulate nor in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the consulate and the embassy are working to search for him".

The news came hours after police confirmed that around 15 Saudis, including officials, arrived in Istanbul on two flights on Tuesday and were at the consulate at the same time as the journalist. "Turkish officials have said they believe he was killed inside in a planned murder".

Khashoggi, 59, went missing last Tuesday while visiting the Saudi Arabia consulate in Istanbul for paperwork to marry his Turkish fiancee. "The consulate officials can not save themselves by simply saying "he has left", Erdogan told a news conference in Budapest, where he is on an official visit. "I know what everybody else knows - nothing", Trump said.

Saudi Arabia said the allegations were baseless.

Mr Erdogan was more circumspect, saying on Sunday he remained "positive" and would await the results of an investigation as Turkish authorities continue to look at camera footage and airport arrivals and departures.

Khashoggi, a 59-year-old veteran journalist who has lived in self-imposed exile in the USA since Prince Mohammed's rise to power, disappeared October 2 while on a visit to the consulate to get paperwork done to be married to his Turkish fiancée.

There was no immediate comment on the report from the Saudi authorities.

Trump, speaking at the White House, said he does not know anything about Khashoggi's disappearance and that he had not yet spoken with Saudi officials about the situation.

The former government adviser, who turns 60 on October 13, has lived in self-imposed exile in the United States since past year to avoid possible arrest.

Two months later, writing about the detentions of scores of Saudi royals, senior officials and businessmen accused of corruption, he said Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman dispensed "selective justice" and said there was "complete intolerance for even mild criticism" of the crown prince.

"See when I hear arrest of a friend who did nothing that is worth to be arrested, make me feel I shouldn't go".

That relationship is already strained over several issues, including Turkey's support for Qatar in the blockade by Saudi Arabia; its closeness to the Muslim Brotherhood - blacklisted by Riyadh as a terrorist organisation; and its rapprochement with Saudi Arabia's arch-rival Iran.

Turkey's Foreign Ministry said a search would be conducted there.

"As if the Saudi authorities were asleep and there was a unusual silence at a time when the news of Khashoggi's disappearance was spread in the world", he noted.

The Washington Post reports a Turkish investigation has revealed that a group of about 15 Saudi men traveled to Istanbul to kill Khashoggi as he visited the consulate.

The US president told reporters on Monday: "Hopefully that will sort itself out".

It would also put Britain directly at odds with the crown prince, who is a key United Kingdom ally. "This case sends a shockwave among Saudi Arabian human rights defenders and dissidents everywhere, eroding any notion of seeking safe haven overseas".
