  • William and Catherine attend Mental Health Summit

Around 4,500 people take their lives every year in England and suicide remains the leading cause of death among men under the age of 45.

The young royals have been strong advocates for mental health, setting up the Heads Together campaign in 2016 through their official charity, The Royal Foundation. "Within families and communities, we often remain silenced by a shame that tells us that those with mental illness are somehow less worthy or at fault for their own suffering". But together we can change that.

"There are only 0.58 beds per 100,000 population in Nepal to avail mental health services while hospitals providing mental health services are only available in urban areas", said Dr Basudev Karki, psychiatrist at Mental Hospital in Patan.

Countries at the summit are expected to support a global declaration to achieve equity for mental health, marking the first time national governments have made a joint pledge to put mental health on an equal footing with physical health.

She said: "This is a great, great compliment".

Duke and Duchess of Cambridge
The duke and duchess were greeted by Health Secretary Matt Hancock

"In my time as health minister I have met many people who have been bereaved by suicide and their stories of pain and loss will stay with me for a long time". Although a cynic might suggest all the government has done with the appointment of Jackie Doyle-Price as Suicide Prevention Minister is make her title longer - she was already the minister responsible for mental health.

At the summit, William and Kate visited a stand run by the non-profit organisation United for Global Mental Health, where they heard about the work of Dixon Chibanda, who started an initiative in Zimbabwe teaching elderly women the skills to offer therapy sessions on "friendship benches".

Today's inaugural summit aligns with the couple's Heads Together charity and their targeted focus on mental health awareness, and is being co-hosted by the British government and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and they watched two presentations on successful mental health programmes in the USA and Slovenia.

It helps to explain why mental health is estimated to cost the economy about £35bn a year.
