Billionaire mogul Michael Bloomberg announced on Wednesday that he is re-joining the Democratic Party, prompting new speculation about his possible presidential ambitions.

Throwing himself into smashmouth presidential politics would force him to abandon the comparatively high-minded path of public philanthropy that has defined Bloomberg's post-mayoral years.

The billionaire - who served as mayor of NY from 2002 to 2013, both as a Republican and an independent - had already said that if he were to launch a presidential campaign, it would be as a Democrat. In 2007, while still mayor, he abandoned the Republican Party and registered as a political independent.

"At key points in US history, one of the two parties has served as a bulwark against those who threaten our Constitution", posted Bloomberg on social media.

And to those critics who are so pessimistic about our economy, I say: Don't be economic girly men", he'd proclaimed. The woman I was originally most in love with was my mother. "I always had respect for women".

The former mayor considered running for president as an independent in 2016 but ultimately endorsed Democrat Hillary Clinton, who lost to Republican Donald Trump. Last week, he announced he was putting $20 million behind Democratic efforts to flip the Senate. In September, he told The New York Times that if he were to run in two years, it would only be on the Democratic ticket. Two years ago at the Democratic Convention, I warned of those threats.

Bloomberg, 76, did not say when he might make a decision on running for president.

The move underscores the liberal-leaning politician's belief, articulated last month in aNew York Times article, that only a candidate aligned with a major political party can win the White House.

The global media company founder said he has registered as a Democrat, which would be especially significant if he decides to challenge US President Donald Trump in 2020.
