Dow ends brutal session with 3.2% loss, Nasdaq -4.1%

Stocks had come close to big drops in the last few days, but each time they recovered some of their losses. "Since the market bottomed in March 2009, it's been more than 10 years of growth stocks leading the way non-stop". "The market's starting to say that the glass may be half empty".

Tech stocks in the S&P 500 fell 2.5 percent Wednesday for the steepest loss among the 11 sectors that make up the index. The benchmark USA stock index hadn't suffered a five-day losing streak since November 2016, just before the presidential election. Technology companies were among the losers, with the Nasdaq Composite dropping more than 2% to 7,575.34.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gave up 831.83 points, or 3.1 percent, to 25,598.74.

The S&P 500 was down 55 points, or 1.9 percent, at 2,824-on pace for its worst day since June.

Netflix shares fell by 6pc and have now fallen by 12pc in the last five days.

Alibaba dropped 4.1 percent after Morgan Stanley and Raymond James cut their near-term profit estimates on the Chinese e-commerce company, citing a softer economic environment in China.

The benchmark ASX 200 has dropped 2 per cent on opening to 5,926, while the All Ordinaries index has slipped a similar amount to 6,034 points. Snap, the parent company of the messaging app Snapchat, fell 4.8pc and sank to a new all-time low.

Insurance companies dropped as Hurricane Michael continued to gather strength and came ashore in Florida bringing winds of up to 155 miles an hour. Berkshire Hathaway dipped 4.7 percent to $213.10 and reinsurer Everest Re slid 5.1 percent to $217.73.

MSCI's gauge of stocks across the globe fell percent, its biggest single-day fall since February.
