Dow ends brutal session with 3.2% loss, Nasdaq -4.1%

Tech stocks in the S&P 500 fell 2.5 percent Wednesday for the steepest loss among the 11 sectors that make up the index. Alibaba dropped 4.1 percent after Morgan Stanley and Raymond James cut their near-term profit estimates on the Chinese e-commerce company, citing a softer economic environment in China.

The benchmark ASX 200 has dropped 2 per cent on opening to 5,926, while the All Ordinaries index has slipped a similar amount to 6,034 points. Snap, the parent company of the messaging app Snapchat, fell 4.8pc and sank to a new all-time low.

Insurance companies dropped as Hurricane Michael continued to gather strength and came ashore in Florida bringing winds of up to 155 miles an hour. Berkshire Hathaway dipped 4.7 percent to $213.10 and reinsurer Everest Re slid 5.1 percent to $217.73.
