Antonia Bauza, deputy mayor of Sant Llorenc des Cardassar, the worst-hit town, confirmed that two of the victims were British citizens.

At least ten people have died and it's thought that one child is still missing following a series of devastating floods which swept across the holiday island of Mallorca, in Spain's Balearic Islands.

In December 2016, southern Spain was hit with severe weather, resulting in widespread flooding and several deaths.

At least nine people are believed to have died in torrential rainstorms on the island of Majorca.

Pedro Sanchez, who had been filming a swollen river with his mobile phone, said he escaped through the window of his auto and swam to safety after the waters rose two metres in 30 seconds, engulfing his vehicle.

In all, more than 500 people helped with rescue and cleaning up operations, as authorities said the rainstorm was unlike any people could remember.

World number one tennis star Rafael Nadal, who is from the island, was seen joining in with the clean-up effort.

FDA: Adults under 45 now eligible for HPV vaccine

Most of the victims were discovered in the town of Sant Llorenc and another in S'illot.

Officials have said more than 600 rescuers and medical staff were at work and that emergency relief centres had been set up in sports halls.

Witnesses described having minutes to find safety as the water levels rose, inundating houses and catching motorists off guard.

"My solidarity and support goes out to the families and friends of victims and all those affected by these tragic floods", Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez tweeted early on Wednesday. "We had to swim to try to survive".

At least three towns closed schools and hundreds of people were sheltered in sports facilities and a local hippodrome, authorities said.

The agency's data showed that some parts of the island received up to 23 centimeters (nine inches) of rainfall in around four hours on Tuesday evening, more than one third of the average amount that rains annually.

Sanchez will be flying to the area later Wednesday, his office said.
